I love chatting to fellow small-biz owners about what gets them going and what grinds their gears about being your own boss. I have created a series of Q&As with some of my fave small brand owners in the hope we can share some behind the scenes insight into our lives as women in business.
Vicks and I have known each other for years, she is a very good friend of mine and we met working in childrenswear design. I'm so excited for these guys, they have a fab product and they're a knowledgable bunch ready to do big things!
Who are ya?
Hey there! We are Victoria, Amy and Kerry. Best friends, family and founders of Kura Organics! Kura is a baby accessories brand specialising in stylish and sustainable travel blankets. Our GOTS certified organic cotton baby wraps are a practical alternative to putting your baby in a coat, offering a more comfortable and convenient solution to keeping them warm and content when travelling.
How and when did you come up with the idea for Kura Organics?
The idea for Kura was formed a few years back when Amy and Kerry, both new mums to winter-born babies, found that ensuring their little ones were a safe temperature when travelling was more difficult than they had imagined. They understood the safety aspects in babies wearing coats in car seats and worried that blankets could easily fall off, or even end up over the baby's head. This led them to realise that there was a gap in the market for something cosy, stylish and practical for parents to nestle their little ones in when on the move. They enlisted Amy’s cousin Victoria, who has extensive experience in childrenswear design, and together brought the ideal solution to life!
What 3 things do you enjoy most in your job as Kura Organics Boss Ladies?
1. Achieving our goals (little by little!) and seeing our visions for the business come to life!
2. Being our own boss' and the freedom and flexibility that can come with it.
3. Being lucky enough to work alongside your best mates who all have the same vision/goal.
What 3 things do you enjoy least?
1. Taking financial risks and hoping/praying they pay off!
2. Not living closer together. Amy and Kerry both live in Yorkshire and Victoria lives in Dorset. It would be lovely to see each other more and have meetings in person, but we make do with FaceTime and Skype!
3. Owning your own business can be time consuming so ensuring we maintain a good work-life balance is important, especially with being mums to little ones!
Any advice for anyone starting out in the world of small biz ownership?
Do your market research before you make any kind of investment. There are so many products and small businesses out there (especially in the baby market!) so find your niche and stick with it. Be authentic, believe in your idea and follow your own path - don’t be tempted to just follow what everyone else is doing!
As much as it can feel like a chore when you have a million and one other things to do, social media should be your best friend - it is a great way of getting your name/business idea out there! Plus, it can be free!
Be sure to bounce your ideas off other people, it’s a great way to back up any big business decisions. We are really lucky as there are three of us to discuss ideas, however if you are a one man/woman band then perhaps think about connecting with other like-minded business owners and asking their opinion.
What are your hopes and dreams for the future of Kura Organics? Where do you see yourself in 3 years time?
We would love to be recognised as number one brand in the UK for baby travel blankets (a big goal but why not aim high!?!). We would also love to expand our product offering - something that we are working on at the moment.
What’s your favourite breakfast?
Victoria - Blueberry pancakes with maple syrup
Amy - Scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and avocado
